With less than two weeks to go before the 27th FIBA Asia Championship tips-off, Filipino basketball fans will have a glimpse on how the three-month buildup of Gilas Pilipinas went through as they take on a PBA selection squad on the 24th and the Kazakhstan national basketball team on the 26th. Both games will be broadcast live over TV5 at 8:30 p.m. (Read: Live on Five: TV5 airs Gilas tuneup matches against PBA stars, Kazakhstan national team)
The PBA selection squad will be coached by coach Franz Pumaren of Air21 Express and will feature superstar players from different PBA teams. The lineup includes Chris Tiu and Paul Lee of Rain or Shine, Peter June Simon, Mark Barroca, and Joe Devance of San Mig Coffee, Cyrus Baguio, Calvin Abueva and JVee Casio of Alaska, KG Canaleta of Air 21, Jay Washington of GlobalPort, Alex Cabagnot and Arwind Santos of Petron, and Chris Ellis of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
Kazakhstan, who has an impressive record under their belt in the years they participated in the FIBA Asia Championship, will have a first crack on the Philippine national team on the 26th. The team from central Asia will banner the 6-foot 0-inches Jerry Johnson as their naturalized player for the tourney.

The Philippines is ranked 45th overall in FIBA world rankings with 10.8 points. So how are those points being calculated? Here’s how.
Countries receive points for each zonal and world championship they participate within the scope of 2 Olympic Games cycle.
Competition Ranking Scoring System
Teams will receive points based on the placement they got in each zonal and world championship they participate in. The tournaments that are taken into account are:

FIBA Americas Championships
FIBA Asia Championships
Eurobasket Championships
FIBA Oceania Championships

Those points they got will then be multiplied by the tournament weighting factor set by FIBA.

So in our case, we have not reached the World and Olympic championship for a couple of years now so all our points came from our participation in the FIBA Asia Championship.
In 2007 FIBA Asia Championship, the Philippines placed 9th. In the competition ranking scoring system, a team that placed 9th will be given 10 points which will then be multiplied to the tournament weighting factor set by FIBA to determine the final number of points earned by a country in a certain tournament. For FIBA Asia Championship, the points earned by a country will be multiplied to 0.3. So in that year, the Philippines gained 3 points (10*0.3).
In 2009 FIBA Asia Championship, the Philippines placed 8th. That gave us 11 points which when multiplied to 0.3 will result to 3.3 points.
Then two years ago in Wuhan the Philippines, under the mentorship of coach Rajko Toroman, finished 4th Place. That gave us 15 points which when multiplied to 0.3 will result to 4.5 points.
If you add the points we got in those 3 FIBA Asia Championships (3, 3.3, 4.5), the score will be 10.8 which is the current number of points the Philippines has now.

China still holds the record of having won the most number of gold medal in the FIBA Asia tourney. They are followed by the Philippines with 5 which we got in years 1960, 1963, 1967, 1973, 1986.
No replacement for Lebanon, says Hagod Khajirian
FIBA Asia said on Friday that they couldn't find a team that could replace Lebanon in the upcoming FIBA Asia Championship this August. Initial reports said that either Iraq or UAE will take the spot but unfortunately, both teams begged off due to lack of preparation.
“The Lebanese NF has been suspended by FIBA as of July 11 with immediate effect. Going by the FIBA Internal Regulations no team or official from any of the suspended National Federations can participate in any FIBA competition,” explained FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian.
“We tried our best to find a replacement team, but given the short period of time available we couldn’t find any,” he added.
This will reduce the participating teams to 15 which will give Hong Kong, Japan and Qatar an automatic spot on the second round of the tourney.
As for the schedule of the games, Hagod said “We may move a couple of games from the Ninoy Aquino Stadium to fill the gap left by the games Lebanon were scheduled to play. We are in the process of finalizing this.”

Now it's official: FIBA suspends Lebanese Basketball Federation
Lebanese Basketball Federation failed to comply with the rules set by FIBA to prevent a possible suspension due to political and judicial interferences inside the organization. Contrary to earlier reports, FIBA did not disclose the duration of the suspension and said that it will only last 'until' proper structures and statutes are put
into place to ensure that basic activities - such as holding of a
national championship - of the national federation can be carried out
smoothly, with proper regulations and without political interference. The following is the press release posted by FIBA on their website:
MIES - Following the disruption of the Lebanese national championship due to political and judicial interferences, FIBA suspended the Lebanese Basketball Federation (LBF) on 11 July 2013 for serious infringement of the FIBA General Statutes and all principles under which the Olympic sports movement is founded.UAE will replace Lebanon in the upcoming FIBA Asia Championship. They will join Japan, Hongkong and Qatar in Group B.
After a thorough review of the situation, FIBA notes that the LBF is not properly armed to face political interferences and solve sporting disputes within its own structures. In addition, FIBA has been informed of allegations of wrongdoings and political pressure leading a number of federation officials to resign from their positions in the Management Board.
FIBA and FIBA Asia did not want to penalise athletes, technical staff, sponsors and basketball fans who have worked for so long and eagerly awaited the participation of Lebanon at the upcoming FIBA Asia Championship and possibly the FIBA Basketball World Cup. This is why FIBA offered - through a letter dated 28 June 2013 - the LBF the opportunity to solve these matters urgently. Regretfully, the Lebanese basketball family was not in the position to meet the requirements outlined and must now assume the consequences of its organisational deficiencies and actions.
Until proper structures and statutes are put into place to ensure that basic activities - such as holding of a national championship - of the national federation can be carried out smoothly, with proper regulations and without political interference, the LBF shall not be re-admitted with full rights as a member of FIBA or be allowed to participate in international basketball competitions.
FIBA and FIBA Asia remain fully committed to helping the LBF in its re-organisation process. FIBA will establish a Working group to meet with all parties, supervise the Extraordinary General Assembly and help establish a federation that functions independently and effectively, in accordance with all principles that are at the core of FIBA's General Statutes.

Philippine U-16 national basketball team swept their way to win SEABA title with an 85 - 44 win against Singapore. The win will also give them the right to represent the region in the 2013 FIBA Asia U-16 Championship which will be held in Tehran, Iran on September 25 to October 4.

Gilas Pilipinas lost, but played well - says coach Chot
Gilas Pilipinas lost their last game against the New Zealand national team, nicknamed the 'Tall blacks', 76 - 77. In a text message to interAKTV, coach chot Reyes said that a late questionable call by one of the game officials with only four seconds left on the game clock could have put the game to overtime.

Gilas Pilipinas improved their win-loss record in New Zealand to 3-2 after beating Aukland Rangers earlier, 95-77. This was their second to the last game before going back to Manila to take on a PBA selection team and Kazakhstan national team as a part of their final preparation for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship here in Manila on August 1 - 11.

Gilas Pilipinas drops second straight loss in their New Zealand training camp after winning their first two games against Hawke's Bay Hawks. They played without naturalized player Marcus Douthit who, according to coach Chot Reyes, is suffering a bad back.
Despite the loss, coach Chot Reyes believes that it was a good game for the national team as their bigs Fajardo, Aguilar, and Pingris held their ground with the absence of Marcus Douthit.
Their next opponent will be the Aukland Rangers (tomorrow) before taking on the New Zealand National team, nicknamed the "Tall Blacks" the following day.

1. This promo is open to everyone.
2. To qualify, register and follow instructions on the Rafflecopter App www.rafflecopter.com/sample
3. Every post and tweet about MyPhone using the assigned #hashtag “#MyPhoneLabanGilas” and “#MyPhoneLabanPinas” entitles participants to more entries to the raffle.
4. Be sure to mention @myphoneofficial in your tweets.
5. Participants must also use the official cover photo “Kasama ako sa Laban ng Gilas, Laban ng Pilipinas” (download here: http://on.fb.me/1dpT82U) for the entire duration of the promo. Once winners have been drawn, MyPhone shall check their accounts to verify the use of the cover photo. Non-compliance to this requirement disqualifies the winner.
The raffle shall run on 2 periods:
1st: Laban ng Gilas vs PBA Stars where tickets for the July 24 game shall be raffled off.
2nd: Laban ng Pilipinas vs Kazakhstan where tickets for the July 26 game shall be raffled off.
6. Each raffle period shall have 2 winners of two (2) Upper Box tickets each and 3 winners of two (2) Lower Box tickets each.
7. Participants may join both promos. However, the registration for the 1st and 2nd periods shall be done separately.
8. The Laban ng Gilas promo period runs from July 12-16, 2013.
9. The Laban ng Pilipinas promo period runs from July 17-21, 2013.
